Alyson Graves

Once A Marist Fashionista, Always A Marist Fashionista

Alumni and Fashion Findings contest winner, Alyson Morilla Graves, is a former design student and winner of the 1997 Silver Needle Award. Alyson’s exceptional designs were highlighted with picture postcard scenery encompassed by a sophisticated earthy feel. Her inspirations came from stunning western scenery such as canyon views and mountainous vistas. Alyson’s flowing luxurious fabrics incorporated suede, leather, and fur that wooed the judges and the audience!
After college, Alyson accepted a design position with prestigious designer Ann Taylor. While working at Ann Taylor she quickly moved up the ranks to head dress designer. During Alyson tenure, she was able to travel throughout Asia and Europe designing and forecasting the latest trends.
Today Alyson lives in Brooklyn with her husband Scott and their two daughters Clover and Marni. While fashion will always be part of Alyson’s life, she has recently taken a leave of absence but hopes to return to the fashion world in the near future.

Here is a look at her Collection:

Feminine Meets Fierce!

What do you get when you integrate sophisticated women’s tailoring with a little bit of edge?  This year, our talented junior designers were asked to choose an inspirational, industry designer and combine it with a theme of their choice. One junior in particular, Grace Buckley, has combined the classic chic of the Channel suit with the use of leather. The thick structure of leather makes assembling the garments an arduous task, but makes for fashion forward designs. The collection includes high waisted pants intertwined with a chiffon chain belt, mimicking the infamous strap on the Channel handbag. Another piece includes a structured leather cutout lingerie top, which contributes to the racy feel of the collection.  With the Silver Needle Fashion Show approaching quickly, these pieces are sure to be jaw droppers while strutted down the runway.

Take a sneak peak behind Grace's inspiration!

Ethical AND Trendy: Fair Trade Fashion
Fashion will meet fair trade on the Silver Needle runway this year! Our sophomore collections will feature fair trade textiles gathered from countries around the world: India, Tanzania, Guatamela, and China.  Why is fair trade important?  This movement not only aims to encourage people to think about where their clothes are coming from before purchases are made, but also, and more importantly, provides ethical profit and fashion-conscious benefits that go directly to the designers who are producing them. This segment is supported by Marist College’s Seaming A[wear]ness program, an educational campaign to promote fair trade awareness in the fashion industry. Seaming A[wear]ness was started by five Marist seniors, including our very own student co-director, Kimberly Warren!

Check out the Seaming A[wear]ness blog at http://seamingawearness.com/ and show your support for this important cause by attending Seaming A[wear]ness day on Wednesay April 27th  right here at Marist!

Freshman Fancy

Where can fancy formal meet runway fashion?  Only at our "Silver Anniversary." This year’s freshmen design students have been given the opportunity to create their own version of the traditional tuxedo shirt. What can we expect to see? Pin tucks, pleats, ruffles, and draping. Our very own Fashion Show Production freshman designer, Forrest Simms, will be displaying his vision of the tuxedo shirt using a simple white shirt with a pin tucked yoke and a scarf that will be attached at the collar.

Stay tuned to check out more sneak peeks of the underclassmen designs!
